There’s ancient Chinese proverb, that goes something like this, “Tell me, I’ll forget. Show me, I may remember. But involve me, and I’ll understand.”  Think of traditional therapy like learning how to ride a bike.  Talk therapy is like telling someone how to ride a bike without actually ever riding one.  While better, demonstrating how to ride a bike still doesn’t give the actual experience of riding the bike.

Albeit, these might work for some people.  But, actually riding the bike, and making mistakes with someone who is watching over and caring for you along the way, is really the fastest, most effective way to learn to ride a bike.

Don’t get me wrong.  I’m not knocking any treatment.  They are all useful, and frankly, they are all part of my approach.  It’s just that I realize that the limitations imposed on traditional therapy can create such an obstacle as to make successful treatment of the client difficult or even impossible.

At the Intimacy Wellness International Center, the approach is a simple, 3-step process which also places the client at the center of co-directing their own treatment (See, blog post: “Consider me your quarterback- you score the touchdown”).  We use step-by-step design, planning, and treatment implementation, then use real-life scenario role plays, incorporating progressive touch therapy, and finally use real-world practice with direct feedback.  All told, it’s a real-world team approach with ancient wisdoms and the client at the core.
